Tata Selo

Tata Selo is an old farmer who killed his oppressive landlord for certain reasons, and was jailed for it. People all around could not believe at what Tata Selo had done to the landlord, as he was not known to be a violent person. During his time in jail, he was being investigated on his motives of murdering kabesang tano. We later find that it was more than simply kabesang tano making Tata Selo leave the land,  but more on having his daughter being sexually assaulted by  the landlord and resulting to his daughter being pregnant, as he was referring to her pregnancy as 'sakit' or sickness.

As I have read the story, I feel nothing but pity for Tata Selo as everything was being taken from him. He was a hardworking person, and yet a person who has  higher authority, is oppressing his family and the result was him dying by the hands of the man he oppressed.  The story of Tata Selo is a representation of the sad reality of victims who are being abused by those with power,  due to the greediness and lack of compassion of their oppressors towards them.

The reality present in this particular fiction is the reality of being sexually abused, oppression, depression and murdering of oppressors and abusers. This particular situation is still present as of this date. Reports all around the world state that people are still being abused everyday by those with higher power; a specific example would be workers who have gone overseas to have jobs that will pay more than their own country could ever pay them.  Reports say that the owners see them as slaves and nothing more which results to physical and mental abuse to the workers. Other examples include the corruption of the government and companies who make profit out of the sufferings of other people. It may be sad,  but this is the harsh reality the people experience everyday, some may get out of this type of situation, but most cannot.

As I have read the story, It provides the readers of how good people turn to desperate decisions that would leave them as the villain to other people's eyes even theough they are merely victims of oppression. It represents the harsh reality of what people of poor origins experience time and time again. The only thing I can do so that people can avoid this type of situation,  is by continually treating  people equally and teaching them that no matter how much pain they endure from their lives, he/she should have a calm and level-headed mind and should lose hope so that they may move forward to a brighter future.
